Waiting On Wednesday -- "Trial by Fire" and "The Jewel".

Welcome to Waiting on Wednesday!
This is where I share what my upcoming pre-orders are, aka, books I’m waiting on. I understand that, yes, The Great Stack now stands at 500+ books, but PRE-ORDERS! So, yay.

The first book coming out next week on September 2 is “Trial by Fire” by Josephine Angelini.

Angelini is the author of one of my favorite series of all time, the “Starcrossed” series. I love this series to much that I actually own a fan t-shirt that references the book on the front and is jersey style on the back with one of the main characters names. If you have not read this series, you absolutely need it. It’s amazingly original and exciting.

But “Trial by Fire” appears to be a complete take-off from this series, but I am fairly certain it will be just as well-written and captivating. Here’s the book description:

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying experiences that others in her hometown of Salem take for granted, which is why she is determined to enjoy her first high school party with her best friend and longtime crush, Tristan. But after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class, Lily wishes she could just disappear.

Suddenly, Lily is in a different Salem—one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruelest of them all is Lillian  Lily's other self in this alternate universe.

In Josephine Angelini's Trial by Fire, what makes Lily weak at home is what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. In this confusing world, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can't hope to shoulder alone and a love she never expected.

I have to say, I love books about witches (and TV shows about witches, and movies about witches, and pretty much anything about witches) so I’m excited to see one of my favorite authors take on this subject matter. I love the high school element mixed in with a parallel universe. I cannot wait for this book. I am likely going to start reading it the second I open the box.

The second book, also coming out on September 2 is “The Jewel” by Amy Ewing.

This books looks to be almost a combination of “The Selection” by Kiera Cass, “The Winner’s Curse” by Marie Rutkoski, and Cinderella. The book description compares it to "The Handmaid's Tale" which I read a pretty long time ago, and barely remember (this is a judgment free zone, thank you very much).
Book description:
The Selection meets The Handmaid's Tale in this darkly riveting debut filled with twists and turns, where all that glitters may not be gold.

The Jewel means wealth, the Jewel means beauty—but for Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Born and raised in the Marsh, Violet finds herself living in the Jewel as a servant at the estate of the Duchess of the Lake. Addressed only by her number—#197—Violet is quickly thrown into the royal way of life. But behind its opulent and glittering facade, the Jewel hides its cruel and brutal truth, filled with violence, manipulation, and death.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her life . . . all while trying to stay alive. But before she can accept her fate, Violet meets a handsome boy who is also under the Duchess's control, and a forbidden love erupts. But their illicit affair has consequences, which will cost them both more than they bargained for. And toeing the line between being calculating and rebellious, Violet must decide what, and who, she is willing to risk for her own freedom.
I enjoyed all the books that I reference and that the description compares it to, so I'm sure I'm going to love this book. Expect me to read it directly after reading "Trial by Fire". I'm pretty pumped to get both of these in, and hope I'm not disappointed.
Have you pre-ordered either of these, or been lucky enough to read an ARC already? Let me know!
